The Simplicity of Being Disconnected

“Why don’t you have your e-mail alerts on in the evening on your phone?!” my mum asked confused and frustrated.

“Why should I have my e-mail alerts on in the evening?!” I asked, as confused and frustrated as her.

“Just in case someone sends you an e-mail” she answered.

“Well, I check my e-mails twice a day for that,” I replied.

“What if it’s an urgent e-mail?” she persisted.

“There’s no such thing as an urgent e-mail. We use the phone for truly urgent things.”

“But if you have your e-mail alerts on, you can reply immediately.”

“Why should I apply immediately if it’s not urgent? Most things can wait. Life can’t.

Switch off your phone. Live in your immediate reality. Trade telephone calls for face-to-face conversations over coffee or dinner. Listen, smell, touch, look.

Breathe and be grateful for all the wonderful things around you.

It’s not your texts and e-mails that you’ll remember at the end of your life.

Life is simple when we get rid of the excess.
